1D MK1 in the House!

February 4, 2009

So a while back I posted that I had upgraded to a 30D. I liked it a lot, but found myself wanting something more. More of what? Yea, I don’t know, but whatever I needed, I found in my new (to me) Canon 1D MK1.

I basically made a trade for the 1D, and WOW, I am AMAZED! I had heard that the IQ in the 1D’s, including the MK1, was the best Canon had made on any camera, and I am stoked to find out that was correct. The image quality on this thing is AMAZING. Even on my little nifty-fifty I get relatively crisp shots. The body is BIG, and since I happen to have HUGE hands, it feels very nice. It’s also heavy, and kinda feels like gripping a tank, which is a big plus! The shutter is incredible. I don’t plan to shoot a lot of sports, but it’s still nice to be able to machine-gun off 8-frames-per-second on a whim. You can practically make video with it! A lot of my friends look at me weird when I tell them I have gone down from 10mp’s (the XTi), to 8mp’s (the 30D), and now to 4.48mp’son the 1D. To this I throw out a few facts about the 1D, starting with price of the 1D MK3 ($5000 +). I want to own, not rent! The 1D MK1 has some awesome features, including: 45-point AF, it’s weather sealed, shoots in 12-bit RAW, shutter speed down to 1/16,000 sec, ISO 100-3200, awesome IQ, 1.3-crop sensor, and a whole bunch of other perks. Some of these can be found in other bodies, but typically not all of them in one body. The *ONLY* downside that I can find, is that this thing eats batteries like crazy. Seriously, I would need somewhere around 12-13 bateries for 1 day of shooting! Otherwise, it’s awesome! Needless to say, I am completely stoked. I wish I had this when we made the Phoenix run. Now I want to go on another road trip!

I have had the 1D a while, but hadn’t posted yet. During that time, I was using the nifty-fifty (Canon 50mm F/1.8) exclusively. Last weekend, I got something new. I picked up a Tamron 17-35mm F2.8-4 SP/AF/Di/. So far, I am LOVING this lens! I saw a few reviews saying that the IQ from this lens is comparable to that of some of the Canon “L” series lenses, and I think I have to agree. It is VERY crisp and has great bokeh. This is not to mention the nice 2.8 aperture.

I hope to have some good shots to put up here soon… Untill then…
