Playing w/ the 30D…

02.27.2009

I felt motivated yesterday, so I decided to pull out the 30D on the way home, and then again at home. I didn’t set out to take anything great, more just to play, so they aren’t photographically great or anything…

Here are a couple of lame obligatory mirror shots… Sometimes, it just has to be done…

The Incredible Breaking Glass…

02.18.2009

So, my wife had a glass of Diet Dr. Pepper on the counter last night, and it did something weird. The glass is thick, and as far as we know, it had NO imperfections or cracks. It was used as part of a set on a regular basis. The bottom has a slight upward concave, so when it is set in liquid, or develops condensation, it forms a weak suction under the glass. It is so weak, it is only faintly noticeable.

Well… Last night Sarah picked her glass up from the bar, and I heard her gasp. I looked over to find Diet Dr. Pepper all over the sofa, and her holding the hollow remains of her glass. Apparently, the suction was strong enough, while the glass weak enough, to rip it in half (actually into about a 1/3 vs. 2/3 chunk). I’m not completely clear as to how it happened, but it was very odd, and a bit interesting.

Here are 2 pictures. The first is how it would normally look, and the second shows and abnormally clean break…

Coupland & Elgin TX…

02.17.2009

I made a couple of stops yesterday so that I could put the new 30D to a *little* use. I didn’t come home with anything great, but here are the shots worth posting. These are all handheld and natural light (although I have the wireless trigger on the camera for a bit, so the EXIF might be wrong)…

These are the shots from Coupland, TX…

I just took these on the table with my wife’s little point-&-shoot Fuji. Sorry for the scene, I didn’t have a good place to do it…

Well. I did it.

The Candid Project…

02.06.2009

I decided I needed something to keep me motivated while my batteries are on their deathbed, so I gave myself a project. We will call it “The Candid Project”. I may not take/post a shot every day, but I am going to try to take random candid shots of people whenever possible, and then post them here.

Now, by “Candid”, I don’t mean shots where people aren’t looking or noticing me take them. I mean shots where I randomly pull out the 1D and grab a shot of whatever face/pose the person next to me feels like making.

So, without further au-du,  here is my first victim participant…

This is Jason. He is a colleague of mine, and a CRAZY one at that. No, seriously, he’s a bit off his rocker. But hey, that’s why we all like him…

Both of these were  taken with “Natural” (see: indoor blinding fluorescent) Light. Both were shot with my Canon 1D MK1 and Tamron 17-35mm F/2.8-4…
